A 23 year old male complains of a hearing difficulty. On examination he is found to have a sensorineural hearing loss in the high frequency range. He is also found incidentally to have a microscopic hematuria and proteinuria. A renal biopsy reveals mesangial proliferation and capillary wall thickening and evidence of glomerular sclerosis. The most likely diagnosis is
a) polycystic disease of the kidneys
