A 1yr old child presented with mild jaundice since birth. On examination the child was also seen to have anemia associated with a moderate splenomegaly. A peripheral blood smear of the child was examined. The red blood cells were spheroids in shape abnormally small in size and lacked the normal central red zone of pallor. The child is suffering from:
