A 6 year old girl presents with a sudden onset of left groin pain. Examination is unremarkable. She gives a history of an upper respiratory tract infection 10 days previously. There is no history of trauma. Sonography reveals a small joint effusion which is aspirated but culture is negative. Plain radiography, a bone scan and an MRI are all normal

a) osteogenesis imperfecta
b) fractured neck of femur
c) congenital dislocation of the hip
